A compassionate initiative rescuing pregnant dogs and puppies, inspired by the heartwarming journey of Shady BE. This project will provide a safe, nurturing property for dogs to birth and care for their puppies, protecting them from shelter disease and overcrowding. Together, we can transform lives—one paw at a time.

This journey began in May 2024, when I lost my beloved dog, Rogan, who had been by my side for nearly 17 years. By late June, while my heart still ached, I felt ready to explore the possibility of welcoming another dog into my life. My first visit to the Shelby County Humane Society led me directly to Shadow who was an 18-month-old handsome lab/pit mix who had been there for many weeks. Though I wasn’t prepared to adopt yet, due to my instant attachment to him I decided to foster him and became part of the shelter’s fostering community.
A month after getting Shadow, I saw a post on the fostering community on Facebook that surprisingly captured my heart. Camila, a mother dog who had just given birth at the shelter, desperately needed a foster home for her and her 6 puppies. The shelter was not equipped to care for them, and their future was uncertain. Though I had never fostered puppies before and quite frankly never birthed nor nurtured any children of my own, I felt an undeniable call to help. I brought Camila (who I called Cam) and her two-day old tiny litter of six home with very little knowledge or training and quickly realized how much she needed support.
Cam was in rough condition. She required medicated baths and extra feedings to regain health and weight as well as lots of attention and love to allow her to feel safe and calm.
Despite initial tension, she soon warmed up to me and Shadow, and we all became sweet companions while offering her some adult and play time away from the puppies.
Just two weeks into fostering, heartbreak struck when we lost one of the puppies suddenly. It was a devastating moment that underscored the fragility of their lives. We laid the puppy to rest on my property and pressed on, determined to give the remaining puppies unwavering love and the best chance possible.
Cam was a great mom at keeping the puppies fed, cleaned and warm. She was weary and healing herself but was a dutiful mother who protected her babies.
The mostly white puppies were named based on basic physical characters – one girl named Sis (tiny but strong and brave), four boys named Snout (black nose), Snouty (black nose and black spot on tail), Flake (all white like a snowflake) and Black Eye (mostly white with a black circle over left eye) later to be named Shady BE.
Cam diligently cared for her litter for six weeks, but as her energy and patience waned, I stepped in to help feed and care for them. Her skin had healed, she put on healthy weight and was ready to find her forever home. Cam was sent to get spayed and ended up being adopted into a loving home.
Motherhood is hard work—every moment demanding love, care, and strength. Cam, nursing her 5 little ones, shows us why a safe, nurturing whelping space is so vital. Help us create a haven where moms and puppies can thrive away from shelter stress and disease. 🐾💛
Having no experience with puppies I learned, through much trial and error, a routine to incorporate feedings, cleaning, play and sleep time. It was a lot of work juggling around my normal life, but mixed with lots of love and fun. They took over my walk-in shower. In this photo it is clean and they are eating on their own for one of their first times.
And here's 10 minutes later... full bellies, bladders empty and snuggles for a warm nap. Time to clean up again!
With some much needed help, outside time became very necessary. They enjoyed the nature and fresh air. I enjoyed quiet time for inside clean up and it also lessened the inside clean up later on.
Shadow became the head of the pack and a great big brother to them all. He was so patient and gentle with them, and enjoyed the playtime.
Puppies turned 8 weeks old and were scheduled for transport to New Jersey. Here's their final ride with Shadow and me. In the last few days of fostering them Black Eye and Shadow really bonded and I was guided to keep him.
A few days before the puppies were scheduled to ship I noticed a sweet bond between Shadow and Black Eye so I was guided last minute to keep him. Our family grew...
Heartbreaking moments with Shady BE, crying in pain with no answers. The shelter’s only option was euthanasia, but I couldn’t give up on him. We chose hope and rushed to Mississippi State for life-saving care. Every life deserves a chance.

After a few weeks of fostering Shady BE, my heart broke when he began limping and whining in pain. Despite consulting several vets, the cause remained unclear without extensive tests, and his condition worsened. His pain grew so severe that he sometimes screamed. As a foster dog under the shelter's care, their limited resources left only one heartbreaking option: euthanasia.
I couldn’t let that happen. Without hesitation, I rushed him to Mississippi State University Veterinary School in Starkville MS, where he was admitted to ICU. His fever soared above 115°F, and his shoulder and elbow swelled alarmingly his second day there.
Diagnosed with septic arthritis of unknown origin, he endured about 10 days in the ICU braving multiple surgical flushings, IVs for extreme pain and fever management and intense physical therapy. The expenses from his total stay amounted to over $10,000.
Shady BE was sent home with two physical therapies. Tie a bell to his front left (good) leg and have him walk around for a bit. Repeat a few times a day. Purpose as I understand it was to annoy him using his good leg so he has to use his healing leg more. Second one was to pick up his back legs and have him walk only on his front ones, wheel barrel style. He did wonderful with both. And he enjoyed the deep tissue massages to that shoulder and arm.
Recovering from surgeries in ICU. He was unable to walk for almost two weeks and his developing body didn't take to that too well. So they started physical therapy with him as soon as he could tolerate it.
One of his amazing vet students who loved and supported him at MSU. Carly was so lovely and updated me with info and pictures twice a day. Due to his rare medical issue and amazing personality, Shady BE instantly became one of their favorite puppy patient.
Bandages off and healing more every day. Still getting sedated physical therapy and deep massage to get that puppy leg working again. Still not walking on his own.
I got to see again him after two weeks. He was in Mississippi and I live in Alabaster, AL so the distance made visiting him difficult. Expecting him to need to be there another week, he was cleared to go home with me that day if I promised to give him his medicines and perform the physical therapy and massage as instructed. We were both so happy! He was hobbling but he was walking on his own again.
We all know this look... But he's back home and that's all that mattered.
Slowly, he healed, thanks to a mix of dedicated care and playful sessions with his best friend, Shadow.
Watching him regain his joy and strength affirmed why every life deserves a chance.

This is the vacant lot with over 9 acres located in unincorporated Shelby County that is perfect for a peaceful whelping center. It's location touches the City of Alabaster which makes it very private and quiet yet easily accessible.

We visited Big Dog Ranch Rescue (BDRR) in Shorter Alabama to tour their whelping and puppy buildings. This is the outside of the building which we will be the inspiration for the floor plan as we plan the building stage. BDRR has graciously offered to be a mentor to us as we move forward with this project.
Hallway view showing the private whelping rooms. This helps with the disease control. Each room will have independent HVAC units to further assist with keeping a clean envrionment.
Each room has its own cleaning materials with special instructions and alerts by the door. Booties are warn when entering the building and additional ones are added if entering each room. Each room is also equipped with a water hose cleaning and drainage system which can be seen in the next photo.
Here's a peek into one of the rooms with momma and puppies. Accommodations will vary depending on the size of momma and puppies, as well as age and special needs.
Each room with have it's own enclosed outside area with a special drainage system and artificial turf for disease control and easy clean up.
